So just what is pH? Well, those initials stand for Potential Hydrogen. Hydrogen is found in acids. The pH scale measures the acidity or the alkalinity of a substance. The pH scale starts at 0 which is pure acid and goes up from there. Each number above 0 means a substance is less acid. When the scale gets to 7.0 that means the substance is neutral. From there it can go to 14 which means the substance is purely alkaline.
The acid side of the scale is measuring hydrogen atoms that are dominant. The alkaline side of the scale is measuring the alkalis that are dominant. The opposite of an alkali is an acid. It is neither good to be too acid or too alkaline because organisms can’t exist in either of those environments. The trick is to find the happy medium and therein lies the challenge!
When mixed, alkalis and acids neutralize each other. Alkalis dissolve substances and acids burn substances. There is an excellent book that I would like to recommend you read. It is called pH Madness by Roger Bezanis. I suggest you get a copy of that book and learn. He does an excellent job of describing what hydrogen is in laymen’s terms. He talks about it being the most important and common substance on the planet. How hydrogen atoms “are the building blocks of all life”.
He specifically gets into what acids are as well as what alkalis are. He goes into the actions of alkalis and acids in the body. He explains how acids burn like fire and how alkalis melt substances and absorb acids. I warn you, he goes into talking about live food vs dead food (promoting vegetarianism and raw foodies). He talks about calorie burning and the gastro intestinal tract as well as empty calories vs whole food calories. This is particularly important to know because of the amino acid affect left behind based on what foods we put into our bodies.
I could never wrap my head around the mentality that more is better when it came to drinking alkaline water. In the case of alkalinity, if your body is supposed to be slightly alkaline (in the low 7 point range), then why on God’s green earth would you feed your body water that measures alkaline levels exceeding that. I’ve seen it advertised in levels above 10 and higher. It seems to me if you do that, you are not addressing the initial issue which is to ask “why is my body running so acid”. Correct that issue and your body will come back into balance on its own. At least that is my logic.
Now it could be that you might need high alkaline water for a short period of time but again, my logic states that if that is the case why would you invest thousands of dollars in a machine that you just need for a short period of time. Sorry to those that support these units; this is just my opinion, me using my thought provoking common sense while trying to get to the root of an ailing body challenge.
I think the most important thing to remember is that cancer and candida feed on and in an acidic environment. Both will not and can not survive in an alkaline environment. Following is a brief list of some alkalizing foods.
